My region in the 21st century
Values, knowledge and skills for sustainable development in the region
"My region in the 21st century" is the name of a project supported by LEADER+, which was conducted by the Alfred Toepfer Academy for Nature Conservation in collaboration with the Georg Eckert Institute for international schoolbook research in the “Hohe Heide” region from March 2006 until May 2007.
Together with the Schneverdingen Cooperative Comprehensive School (KGS) and the Bad Fallingbostel secondary school (HRS) we carried out short and long projects. Content and methods were imparted to children in several workshops and they worked on the sustainable development of the region.
Experts from various countries could also participate in workshops on the topic of sustainability and education for sustainable development (ESD). Their contributions enriched the discussion. In 2006 the project received an award as a UN decade project from the national committee of the German UNESCO commission. For the award projects were chosen which perform “excellent education work” in connection with “education for sustainable development”.
The project results were published in the NNA journal “Nature conservation in schools”. An English version is available as a download.
This publication is targeted at teachers as well as externs who work with children and teenagers from year 5. Based on our own practical experience, we want to give suggestions on how versatile education for sustainable development (ESD) can be designed in school.
How to include topics such as nature conservation on our doorstep, global justice and sustainable consumption in classes?
How to strengthen empathy, methodological competence and the ability to act?
And where is room for creativity, fun and personal development?
Education for sustainable development is about content and methods. The theory behind it is comprehensive and seems to be quite bulky at times. But, especially when working with children and teenagers, practice comes with a lot of small vivid steps whose results are versatile and often surprising.
